After the M6s 5-0 season opener in "the cup" against an absent Scarbs team, this Saturday saw our first league game of the season at home to a fully present Hull's M5 team. The start of the week saw us with a healthy 5 subs and a planned 4-4-2 formation but by Friday night we were down to 2 subs and, in a dithering approach familiar to those that have seen him in the opposition D, on Saturday morning our captain decided to go for a 3-2-3-2 formation. Depending on who you ask 3-2-3-2 is designed to support lots of triangles on the pitch or is an "old mans formation" designed to reduce the amount of running required. In any event, and without passing any comment on the average age of the squad, it seemed to suit the M6s down to the ground. Lots of nice passing hockey followed and, by half time, we found ourselves slightly surprised to be only 3-0 up with goals from Willow, Aidan and debutant Sam Richardson. Tangfastics were consumed at half time where the message was "more of the same" and "don't get complacent". The M6s duly complied with Aidan getting another 4 goals in the second half. Promising debuts from the youth of Sam Richardson, Rufus Brown and Alex List, and the less youthful Nick Jackson but more importantly a good team performance making use of the space Hull gave us to play some nice passing hockey. Next week's away fixture at Acomb will provide more of a challenge I expect but it was an excellent start to the season. With apologies to Jacob for the rather dull game in goal.
