The Ladies 5s earned their first 3 points of the season, with an away win at Driffield.

It was a game of two halfs.

First half 3-0 to York

The team started sharply, enjoying much of the possession and creating attacking chances in and around the Driffield D. The first goal came from a short corner, with Lydia slipping the ball to Hannah who slotted in calmly after an initial rebound. York continued to press for goals, with wave after wave of attacks - making good use of the wings, down the right through Emily, Alice and Catherine, and down the left through Sophie, Annie and Fern. The pressure led to Lydia scoring York's second goal with a smart strike under pressure. York kept pressing, with Ash and Issy marshalling the back line and dealing calmly with any balls that came through from Driffield. York's third goal came following a transfer round the back, with the ball falling to Anna in acres of space to pass to Lydia who calmly shot past the keeper, in at the right post.

Second half ...

Driffield came out in the second half with a mission to score early and get back into the match. York had to withstand a period of prolonged pressure, including a number of short corners, but committed defending and goalkeeping kept the ball out. After a smart save from Eddie, and subsequent clearance, the Driffield players were heard wondering how they could get the ball in the goal (always nice when the forcefield is in your favour!). Having survived the storm, York gathered the energy to put together some attacking moves of their own but could not convert. With York tiring, the Driffield attack started to make more progress in the game. They had a sustained period of play in and around the York D, and eventually the pressure paid off with a goalmouth scramble resulting in a bobbly ball that made it over the line. However, for Driffield it was too little too late, and York saw out the rest of the match to finish with a 3-1 winning scoreline!

Player of the match was Emily, for a committed and quality performance, including some last-ditch defending in the D, managing Driffield attackers and setting up counter-attacks.

Special mention also to Driffield teas - not only a tasty pasta bake and garlic bread, but also an unexpected treat of millionaire's shortbread and brownies. An early contender for tea of the season!
