Seventh heaven
It was an excellent end to the season for the M8’s as they scored 7 against Ben Rhydding.
The M8’s started brightly, with Neil going close to opening the scoring in the first minute. However, it was not long before their attacking play was rewarded with Tom getting his and the team’s first goal after just 5 minutes. The team played some good hockey at times with neat passing and got on top of a depleted Ben Rhydding. Further goals came after 10 minutes, Tom again, and 20 minutes, with Garry Peacock getting on the scoresheet. The half finished 3-0 to M8’s.
The second half continued with the M8’s passing nicely and making the ball do the work. It wasn’t long before Tom grabbed his hat-trick after 40 minutes. Just 5 minutes later Gideon made it 5-0.
Shortly after that the M8’s lost Tony when the ball struck him on his thumb. With M8’s down to 10, and with some fresh players arriving, Ben Rhydding mounted more pressure and tried to get a consolation. However, the defence stood firm, marshalled by Garry and with Roddy making a couple of good saves to keep Ben Rhydding out. York weathered the storm. Neil struck on 55 minutes to finally score having been close on several occasions earlier, including the umpire awarding York a short corner moments before Neil had put the ball in the back of the net.
There was still time for one more goal, on 65 minutes Tom concluded the scoring with York’s seventh and his fourth of the match.
All told an excellent end to an excellent season, a top half finish just below the M7s and a goal difference of 0. Thanks to the squad and to captains Andy and Dougie.
