CoYHC M8’s v Acomb 2

COYHC 8 followed up last week’s win at Scarborough with a second victory against Acomb 2s.

The team made a solid start with the defence remaining resolute throughout a challenging first half. Particular mention must be made of Oli P who played a robust role against a much older and more physical opposite number. His grit and determination exceeded his years, and to be brutally honest, despite the manhandling that he was constantly being subjected to he held firm and throughout the game, his skill and fitness came to the fore and made a considerable contribution to the team’s victory. Once again, George dominated the midfield both in attack and defence. He was well supported by Mark, JP, Oli and Gideon.

At half-time the score was 0-0, however the York team found another gear, and midway through the second half we were suitably rewarded by a well worked team goal. For the third game in a row, Neil found the back of the net to break the deadlock. Rather than sitting back and handing the initiative to the opposition, we pressed hard for another goal. Particular mention must be made of Alf, Isaac and Tom, who constantly hassled and harassed Acomb defence, but were cruelly denied a second goal.

The final, five minutes witnessed Acomb throwing everything at York and winning a couple of short corners. However, with over 250 years of experience the defensive lineup of Gary, Tony, Shane, Gideon and Roddy admirably held the line and denied Acomb any opportunity of sneaking a draw.

In terms of MVP, it could have gone to any member of the squad of 14, but as the stand-in skipper, I am going to potentially exceed my remit and award it to Oli P for his outstanding contribution in defence. I just hope we do not lose him to the world of boxing were I am confident he would earn a very good return.
