It was an excellent result for the Men’s 8 against, what on paper was a superior Men’s 7 team. However, the M8’s showed a dogged determination to match their opponents and defended brilliantly; with some good hockey being played when able.
The M8’s started brightly, keeping the ball and attacking the 7’s. However, it was not long before the M7’s managed to seize control of the game and dominate possession, but were unable to fashion a goal. The defence was outstanding and the young fullback, Oliver, twice cleared off the line. The half finished 0-0.
The second half continued where the first ended with M7’s have more possession and multiple short corners, but the M8’s held out until about 15 minutes into the half when M7’s took the lead. The M8’s stuck to their tasks, and started to create a chance or two themselves. Then on 61 minutes, Gideon received the ball in the attacking D flicked the ball to his right, where Oli reacted first to expertly lift the ball into the roof of the net. 1-1.
M7’s went in search of a winner, but the defence stood firm and saw out a well deserved 1-1 draw.
