York 7's come through an epic game of two halves

York 7ths escaped the York City boundaries for the first time this season with a trip to Adel
Early good vision by the Club’s Junior chair had spotted that the venue was not actually Adel, but Cookridge. Five York cars attacked the new pitch’s car park, but it put up a spirited defence until half an hour before the game started and the gates finally opened with York putting five cars in (to the car park).
This turned out to be a premonition of the game of hockey that quickly ensued! As Captain Perryman in his post-match interview put it “it was a game of two halves”.
Another lively start by York saw them passing the ball around well and probing the Adel D. Unfortunately, this didn’t last long, not because Adel had come into the game, but York began to gift the ball to the opposition. McClean senior may need to be checked out for late onset colour blindness as he deftly passed to the men in luminous orange.
Fortunately, York weathered the storm of their own making with Douglas Duffus-Hodson a reassuring presence in goal, at times passing the ball well out of defence. Soon, it was half time.
The cavalry man was the model of an officer and a gentleman during his very polite half-time team talk, given the circumstances. The team were moved by this act of kindness, or perhaps it was the first appearance this season of the Haribo, and were soon putting the words of wisdom (and added sugar) into practice.
Starting with Dave and Pete at the back the ball progressed well through the right and left backs, Josh Perryman and Felix McClean, going through the midfield of Jamie Clarke, Finn Baqai and Josh Prins. Even McClean senior managed to pass to some red shirts. York had several chances, before a fast and flowing move down the right was ably finished by Sam Moore.
With Allo (only one Allo in action for York this week – get well soon Jack) and Emil Waites making large amounts of space up front, with particularly fast paced attack from Emil, Adel began to look punch drunk. It was only a matter of time before Sam got a diving second, followed by a third. Unsurprisingly, Sam the hattrick man was awarded man-of-the-match.
York were also winning short corners, no mean feat given the critical umpiring audience. Shots began to be on target, with Josh Perryman placing a rebound with some finesse. In all, York scored five, with a nice shot from Allo being helped over by Josh Prins.
With this one good result, York 7s should leap towards mid table. What might this team achieve with half time oranges!
