Match Report

An interesting start this week for the mighty 6's with a home game against local rivals Acomb 2's. An early email from Paul Rowntree having a training session with the hockey heroes and little ones confirming there had been a frost and the pitch was a little on the icy side. Captain Cadogan emailing all to see if a 4.30 push back would suit instead to avoid cancellation. No response as far as I was aware from the opposition with Paul making an executive decision to confirm the game was indeed on. Wiggy a little concerned following his bionic foot repair wanting to ensure this would not effect his dynamism.

10.30 was confirmed and Acomb turned up in their usual orange kit, obviously not reading they're own email to confirm they were to play in white. Instead following intervention they changed to green.

A change of personnel due to club availability and In came Tony Brimble and up to the 5's for Adam Gilbert. Fast footed and birthday boy Mikey Jacobson also joined the troop alongside bruised and battered from last week Sam Moore. Usual warm up, Ali Birch too busy chatting to realise and then time for a 2 minutes silence to honour the fallen on armistice weekend.

The game commenced with the usual shrill and York were sufficiently roused to start well. Soon it became apparent that York would be too strong. Good work from Jasper Richardson and Bailey Kaye in midfield ably assisted by Paul Rowntree and forward momentum soon ensued.

Andrew Wilson scoring early settled any nerves and it was clear the fitness training pre season had paid off as he scored from almost 1 yard. Celebrations were in fine form as his children celebrated on the side line. 1 became 2 soon afterwards with Captain Cadogan hitting the corner and 2 nil. At this point thing were looking rosy, but a rare error in the reverse by Matt Marshall let Acomb back in and some how they scrambled home to make it 2-1.

Jasper Richardson then stepped up and dribbled round in circles keeping the opposition guessing. His mazy run continued into the 23 and then the D, reverse stick shot and bottom corner 3-1 and daylight again. Andrew Wilson now with plenty in the tank slotted his second from even closer and with a puff of his cheeks celebrated a brace.

Acomb were good at the break and with York pushing forward at every opportunity, they managed to have themselves a couple of opportunities and a PC. David Hyams stepped up to the plate and saved well ensuring Acomb could not get a foot hold back into the game. York again in Acombs D gained a PC of their own, team huddle and if you've not seen it on Whatsapp, a potential goal of the season from Paul Rowntree volleying a high ball deflection into the net, 5-1 and half time.

No oranges or haribo's on offer and just a team talk, what a disappointment. Never mind, a good first half and keep ball time was required in the 2nd half.

Change of ends and away mighty York went again, Wiggy and his bionic foot looking good down the right and Deceptively fast Birthday boy down the left. Acomb offered little, but defended stoutly. David Hyams between the sticks a mere spectator and with nice movement around the back from Sam Moore and Loz Thornton, Acomb were lost.

A quick ball just outside the D, pass from Ali Birch to Birthday boy Jacobson just stayed the right side of the line thanks to a slight pitch imperfection. Nice first touch and birthday boy whacked home. Whistle and disallowed as the umpire assumed it had gone straight into the D, no it didn't. What could York do but reset. Tony Brimble score from a good shot at top D from a PC and Bionic Wiggy scored a 7 with a great passing move.

7-1 was how it ended. 3 more points, captain Cadogan almost top of the table on goals scored and as Loz confirmed a magnificent average of 6.25 goals per game.

Well done all,

Ali
