Once You Pop, You Can’t Stop

Saturday saw City of York 6's head in to their 7th game of the season with their heads held high after a well fought win the week before. The weather was dull and rainy but the spirits were high as the whistle blew to start the game. As soon as the game started York put the pressure on to Boston spa leading to the first goal flying in after only 5 minutes. This gave york the confidence to press harder and open the floodgates to the boston spa goal. Minutes 7 and 9 saw more goals from Paul Rowntree including a well worked short corner routine with a diving finish, getting him worryingly close to two hat-tricks in two games. Andrew Wilson bravely stared down countless hit outs from the Boston Spa centre back (A man known to hit a ball at roughly teeth height) which lead to York picking up the ball in midfield and working it forwards creating chance after chance to score. Some amazing passing made light work of the boston spa defence and Ali Birch worked it round the keeper but pushed the final touch wide of the goal. Lucky for him, Captain Cadogan was there on the post to slot it in. York were all over the game at this point, goals came in at minutes 24,26 and 27 after continuous exemplary play by all the team. Later, John Barrett stopped the ball at the top of the D, struck a shot clean into the right edge of the goal, only to have Captain Cadogan deflect it over the goal! Throughout the half, Jasper had been consistently in the right place but nothing had come of it, until some expert dribbling round the top of the D and a pin point shot to the bottom corner secured him a goal. York getting slightly tired from running back to the halfway line every 3 minutes faltered a little on their press, and Boston spa got a running play through the middle of the pitch. A ball was sent through too fast for their attacker and as such was left by Loz in defence but George Bradley-Consitt was cold and bored at the back and as such decided to kick the ball out to their centre forward! Quick thinking and defending play from Adam loz and Matt secured the ball and defused the situation. Back on the attack again for york. Baileys new grip on his stick must have worked as he dribbled half the defence, and found Captain Cadogan by the penalty spot to slot in his 4th goal of the game. Whistle blown for half time, 10-0 to York.
Half time talk was a mixed bag for york. On the one hand the team needed to keep their heads down and not get giddy over the score line, but also there was the chance to attack the clubs goal scoring record in this game. In the end, everyone agreed to play as if it was 0-0 and to start again. George took off his kit and got some time outfield as York played 11 men outfield for the second half.
Second half and Boston Spa parked the bus. After the events of the first half, York seemed to lose steam in the second half even though they were full from James wallis' leftover trick or treating sweets! The ball was worked round to the corners and across the goal but Boston Spa defence continuously defended well and York couldnt score. Many penalty corners were had but some good goalkeeping (and one foot on the line) thwarted yorks defences. Finally york found some rhythm and got their first goal of the second half. Bailey Kaye fought his way through the middle of the pitch even after being flattened multiple times by Boston Spa players and Jasper took a shoulder to the ribs, but even that couldn't halt the unstoppable force of York 6's who scored yet again. More play ensued without much to say until a short corner routine saw the ball bounce off the post onto a Boston spa defenders shoulder giving york a penalty stroke. Boston Spa argued the decision fiercely and netted yellow cards for aggression to the umpire. Laurence Thornton was all ready to take the stroke until Jasper announced that if he scored it would be his hat-trick goal. No choice for laurence but to look on from the halfway line as Jasper surgically sent the ball to the back of the net. Boston Spa played damage limitation at this point out of the game until the final whistle. 14-0 was the final score with 4 goals for Paul and Captain Cadogan and hat tricks from Jasper and John.
York 6's remain undefeated this season with an impressive goal difference of 38 in 7 games.

MoM: Bailey for outstanding work in midfield and for his rubber bones keeping him running after practically being assaulted.
DoD: Captain Cadogan for deflecting Johns shot over the bar.
