2009/2010 season
The under 16 Boys B team had three tough
games today, but came away with three very creditable and entertaining
draws.
After a poor start to the first game which saw them go three down to Rotherham
in the first ten minutes, York showed great spirit to come back and gain
a three all draw, through goals from Matt Andrew and Jack Purrington twice.
A much improved performace in the second game saw York twice take the
lead against a strong Doncaster side, through goals from Josh Longster
and Matt Andrew, only to be pegged back on each occasion. The game ending
2-2.
The final match saw York play Wakefield in a game they really should have
won. Matt Andrew gave York the lead after latching on to a fine through
ball from Myles Rawlings. Peter Fitton then doubled Yorks advantage before
Wakefield scored to get themselves back into the game. York quickly made
it 3-1 with another goal from Matt Andrew, his fourth of the day, but
unforthunately York were unable to close out the game and allowed Wakeflied
two late goals, for their third draw of the day.
National Cup Round1
City of York 3 – 1 Crewe Vagrants
Crewe dominated early on but an excellent ariel from the back started a York counter attack. Michael Sansoni picked up the ball and teed up Oli Bonny who hit home low into the bottom left corner. York then dominated the rest of the half with great play from both Tom Feasby and Rob Ramsden. The 2 other York goals where from identical short corner conversions. Tom Feasby dummied the drag flick ,took the ball around the 1st runner then flicked it high into the top left corner. The York defence stood strong throughout the game with Paul Hemsley taking a key role. Hemsley was unfortunately injured with 10 minutes remaining and the resulting positional changes allowed Crewe back into the game. Crewe capitalised and scored a scrappy consolation goal in the dying minutes. The game ended City of York 3 Crewe Vagrants 1, York now advance to the 2nd round which will be played on the 15th of November.

City of York Under 16 Boys 2nd round National Cup
York Hockey Club Under 16 Boys travelled by coach to Alderley Edge to participate in the second round of the England Hockey Under 16 Cup.
The boys played against Alderley Edge at Fallibroom High School.
Expectations were high given the sides success in the Under 15 Cup last
year.
Alderley were a good side but all the attacking and play came from York,
with the Alderley keeper keeping out a handfull of shots on target but
eventually succumbed to a well struck short corner from Myles Rawlings.
York led 1-0 at half time, and the second half was again all York with
most of Alderley defending. Yorks second goal came from a well struck
shot from Seb Murgatroyd, followed by a third from Jack Purrington.
Final score 3-0. York Under 16 boys now travel to Cheshire to continue
their pursuit of The Cup.
City of York Hockey Club Under 16 Boys Teams – Played in the Yorkshire Youth League
The City of York Under 16 Boys ‘A’ team travelled to
Ben Rhydding Hockey Club on Sunday 6th December. They
faced three tough teams in Rotherham, Bradford and Sheffield. York’s first
match was against Bradford and after a nervous start; York began to dominate
with the first goal coming from Josh Longster. This was followed up by
2 goals from short corners from Josh Longster and Myles Rawlings. York’s
fourth goal again came from an initial set piece and netted by James Wilson.
York’s dominance continued with a fifth goal by Myles Rawlings (deflected
off a defenders stick) again from a short corner. Josh Songster’s relentless
attacking finished off again by James Wilson gave York a deserved 6-0
win.
York’s second Match against favourites Sheffield was a harder fought affair.
Some fine goal keeping from Jordan Nelson and defending from Tom Grainger
kept Sheffield at bay. A well earned short corner brought York their first
goal courtesy of Myles Rawlings. Some fine running attacks by Lewis Mortimer
and Jack Purrington paid off with Jack scoring York’s second. York never
let Sheffield settle and a fine penetrating run down the right wing by
Harry Dixon and put away by Josh Longster resulted in York’s third goal.
Final score 3-0.
York’s final match against Rotherham was also hard fought. Again some
fine goalkeeping and defending from Elliot Colley and Luke Doran led to
some good breaks against play. Callum Craigs relentless battling in midfield
and linking with Josh led to 2 goals from Josh Longster. Final score 2-0.
Well done York A for completing a clean sweep and Jordan Nelson for keeping
a clean sheet.
City of York Hockey U16 Boys ‘B’ Team had three tough
matches in the Yorkshire Youth League on Sunday 6 December at Harrogate.
York played well in the opening match against arch-rivals Ben Rhydding
'B', and after going down by one goal following a series of good saves
from keeper Nathan Wilson, York stormed straight back with two goals from
Matt Andrew. Rory Ainslie added a third, and York ran out winners 3-1.
In the second match, York held Ben Rhydding's 'A' team until the final
10 minutes, when the defence finally broke down, and Ben Rhydding added
four goals in quick succession to win 4-0, despite further good saves
from keeper Wilson.
A lacklustre performance in the final match against Leeds saw York give
up three goals, again in the latter half of the match, losing 3-0.
RESULTS/MATCH REPORTS FROM SUNDAY 7 February 2010
City of York Hockey Club Under 16 Boys ‘A’ Team
On Sunday 7 February City of York Under 16 Boys (A) team travelled to
Ben Rhydding for the next round in the Yorkshire Youth League.
They encountered their toughest group match to date with games against
Slazengers, Ben Rhydding and Driffield. In their first match they encountered
a determined Slazengers side. Initial pressure was all from York. The
first goal was scored by Harry Dixon assisted by Callum Craig. This was
followed up by a well hit goal from Josh Longster. Slazengers came back
at York strongly in the latter part of the match but some fine keeping
from Jordan Nelson kept them out of the match.
Final score 2-0 (Win for York).
Ben Rhydding were a harder nut to crack. York upped their pace and were first to score early into the start of the match and caught their opposition napping. Ben Rhydding struck back soon afterwards with an equalizer. The game ebbed and flowed with each goal from York being answered by Ben Rhydding. The score at 2 apiece the last 8 minutes was a tense affair. Good runs from Lewis Mortimer and Josh Longster ended in Josh scoring his third, and with sustained pressure from Jack Purrington and Seb Murgatroyd and good defending from Elliot Colley, and Conan McBroom the game finished with a win for York 3-2 (win for York).
The final match against Driffield (unbeaten in the league this year as
are York) was a good match. It was a tight game with good midfield play
from Myles Rawlings, Luke Doran, Greg Bowler and Callum Craig. Tom Grainger
as always good in defence and James Wilson attacking on the right wing
could not score despite numerous opportunities. Despite York having more
opportunities to score than Driffield it was the latter who scored and
held on to win 1-0. (Loss for York). York’s first defeat of the season
was a bitter pill to swallow.
Well done again York on a very polished performance.
City of York Hockey Club Under 16 Boys ‘B’ Team
The ‘B’ Team had just one match in the Yorkshire Youth League on Sunday
7 February at Huntington, against Halifax.
A very positive team performance resulted in a 1-0 win against 10-man
Halifax. The goal was a well-crafted play, starting with an aerial from
Rob Abell in the York zone to Matt Andrews, Peter Fitton and finished
off by Oliver Hicks on a nifty reverse sweep.
York could have had had several more goals off short corners, with Peter
Fitton having a number of opportunities.
Keeper Nathan Wilson had to make a couple of strong saves, notably off
a couple of short corners, and he was ably supported by the York defence.
A well-rounded team effort produced the result.
City of York Hockey Club Under 16 Boys [In the final 16 of the National Cup]
City of York Hockey club U 16 boys national cup run saw the team make
a third excursion across the Pennines to the North West to face Oxton
in the Wirral. 8 goals and a clean sheet took the boys into the last 8
of the competition for the second year running.
When the red machine turns up and plays with passion and control the hockey
is of the highest quality. York effortlessly moved the ball from defence
through the midfield to the strike force and on to Oxton’s back board.
Oxton were just not strong enough, it was not that Oxton did not play
good hockey, they did. For a spell in the first half and for a large proportion
of the second half Oxton had more of the possession than York. York’s
midfield Lewis Mortimer, Myles Rawlings, Callum Craig and Jack Purrington
had the most competitive day being matched by Oxon’s technical competent
middle four, but the work rate of York’s quartet was too high, games are
usually won in the midfield this was no exception.
The Oxton defence was just too weak for Seb Murgatroyd, Harry Dixon, and
Josh Longster with 6 goals between them. James Smith keeping goal when
required was dominate in the D, a clean sheet is as valuable as any goal
tally. York’s defence like the strikers were just too good Conan McBroom,
Elliott Colley, Tom Grainger and Luke Doran were never under too much
pressure.
8 nil, a convincing win that represented the gap between the two sides.
York U 16’s continued development is a tribute to the coaches and the
boys. Reaching the last 8 in the land two years running is a no mean feat.

City of York Hockey Club Under 16 Boys
In the Quarterfinals of the England Cup
City of York Under 16 Boys travelled to London over the weekend to continue their challenge for a place in the finals of the England Cup.
For the second year running York boys had reached the quarterfinals and
there was much expected of them. Training had gone well albeit curtailed
by frozen pitches resulting in them training indoors.
Nigel Heard and David Clamp their coaches had them well drilled. Arriving
in London on Saturday and going straight into a practice session with
a specially booked pitch showed the commitment of all involved. Early
to bed followed by an early morning jog and they were on their way to
meet Bromley and Beckenham (the current England under 16 champions and
indoor champions).
Given their pedigree Bromley and Beckenham looked a formidable side on paper (boasting 3 England Under 16 players including their top scorer). Match under way and York perhaps showed their opponents too much respect and it was their opponents who were quicker to the ball and calmer under pressure. They put goal after goal away and were soon two nil up. York almost scored with Josh Longster coming close on two occasions but it was Bromley and Beckenham who scored another two quick goals. York showed heart and upped a gear towards the end of the first half scoring with a well rehearsed move finished off by Seb Mergatroyd.
Callum Craig and Myles Rawlings battled endlessly in midfield and there was no further score in the first half. Not sure what Nigel said to the boys but from the push off they scored within minutes and looked a different side with Jack Purrington pulling the score back to 4-2. Attack after attack and York had a handful of short corners but some good goalkeeping and some unlucky decisions meant they failed to score again. (Myles Rawlings and Harry Dixon coming close) Lewis Mortimer battled hard on the left wing and even managed to win a green card.
They were a good match for the opposition in the second half but two breaks against play saw Bromley and Beckenham score twice more and again from a short corner. Some fine keeping from James Smith kept Bromley from scoring again. There was also some good defending from Luke Doran, Elliot Colley Tom Grainger and Conan McBroom but in the end their opposition were just too skilled and ran out deserved winners 7-2. The score line was a bit flattering to the winners because York were better than that, but not good enough.
Congratulations go to Bromley and Beckenham (possible champions again), and also to York for reaching the quarterfinals of the England Cup and doing their Club proud.
RESULTS/MATCH REPORTS FROM SUNDAY 14th March 2010
City of York Hockey Club Under 16 Boys ‘A’ Team
City of York Under 16 Boys A travelled to Brigshaw High School to play
Wakefield A in the final match before The Playoffs in the Yorkshire Youth
League later next month.
In a tightly contested and occasionally fractious match, City of York
prevailed 1-0, the winning goal coming from a clever deflection off a
penalty corner and put away by top marksman, Josh Longster.
City of York continued to press and were unlucky not to score more as
a result of many sweeping moves that carved open the Wakefield defence.
Jack Purrington’s perennial workrate combined well with Calum Craig’s
midfield distribution prowess to enable City of York to play a high tempo
game.
City of York did not have the game all their own way however and resolute
defending by Luke Doran with some fine keeping by Jordan Nelson at Wakefield
set pieces kept City of York’s noses in front and resulted in yet another
clean sheet.
City of York will now take their place in the end of season play-offs
at Halifax Hockey Club on Sunday 18th April.
The second match against Ben Rhydding ‘B’ did not take place due to Ben
Rhydding withdrawing.

City of York Hockey Club Under 16 Boys ‘B’ Team
City of York Hockey U16 Boys ‘B’ Team played two tough matches in the
Yorkshire Youth League on Sunday 14 March at Thirsk.
York fought bravely in the first match against a strong Sheffield side,
defending well, and were only two goals down until the last 10 minutes,
when injuries reduced York to 10 men, and Sheffield took advantage with
three late goals to make the final score an unrepresentative 5-0.
York were straight back on against top of table Driffield, and after an
early barrage left York again a player down through injury and behind
5-0, they held Driffield scoreless the rest of the way. Keeper Nathan
Wilson making a couple of strong saves, and the rest of the team battled
hard to the end to keep some pride intact.

York U16’s Tales From The Touch Line
The adventures of two boats
Bobs lost the plot a wet pitch has nothing to do with Boats.
The first player to get a name check in this, the first dispatch of the
U16 boys 08/09 season is, Tom, Tom Moss for three clean sheets late into
the third and final game Tom pulled off a wonderful save, great concentration.
Moss the Boss.
Quickly followed by the `lone ranger` Tom Granger who’s performance’s
across all three matches came from the top draw, the pant draw, time after
time Tom tackled with excellent timing strength and bottle, his distribution
matched his tackling. A Rolex of a performance from the makeshift defence.
(do you get that Time after Time, Timing, Rolex, - stay with us, please
keep up…. Mr Green )
This was the first competitive outing of the all new York
U16 boys squad, the side gelled very quickly and played some brilliant
hockey playing the first match against reining champions Dandruff and
after settling down to a glossy performance getting healthy roots to the
day with a 2-0 win which then saw us beating Briadford the same result
and Highlights 4-0, head and shoulders above any other team, a most pleasing
result as the Halifax coach rejected all U15 York boys from Yorkshire
(do you get it Dandruff, Head And Shoulders, glossy, healthy routes, if
only the Halifax coach was bald we’d have a punchline.)
Ollie scored two stunning goals and was our highest scorer for the best
part of twenty minutes until game three when Josh woke up and his shredded
wheat began to work bagging his first hat trick with the last strike of
the match
I’d like to personally thank Elaine for the sausage sandwich, not quite
a bacon sandwich (always room for improvement) but it was a rather nice
sausage. Thanks. Despite Matt’s high tech magnetic mini foldaway’able
hockey pitch in executive briefcase style gadget (on loan from Newcastle
FC Who are currently piloting a new approach – the absolutely clueless
approach) and his clear instructions of who is playing where, Lewis your
playing left half, which means your playing on the left half way up. Lewis’s
dad then inquired of Lewis where are you playing son, the response “what,
me, … I don’t know, I think I might be on the left” He then went on to
inquire about his gum shield Lewis’s initial reply “left hand pocket half
way up”
Now that laugh, I knew I had heard it somewhere could it have been the
streets of Dublin,
Michael Green was back on the scene,
with tales of two boats, vessel 1 “egg on face”crewed by the laidback
chases and vessel 2 “just one more” the Green speed machine, Lewis’s asked,
which boat am I on - That’ll be the left,
In the absence of Bernard one can only ponder what positive encouragement
would have come from Mr Chase, as York take three good wins towards the
title race,
“ come on lads you’ve looked better”
Under 16 Boys YYL Play Offs
The U16’s fulfilled their precocious talent by reaching the semi-finals of the play-offs. Starting off as they meant to go on, they were busy and industrious against a dangerous Sheffield Hallam side. Whilst nullifying the oppositions’ speedy winger, York counter-attacked well, scoring twice with well-stuck goals from the edge of the “D” through Jonny Kilmartin and Mike Sansoni.
Perhaps the game of the playoffs was against Wakefield ‘A’, with York keen to impress against former York players. Wakefield pressed early on and managed to forge a lead through a well taken effort. The U16’s responded with a poacher’s goal from Luke Chambers-Smith and then two identical drag-flicks in the top corner from Mikes Rawlings – York running out 3-1 winners.
Next up – the old foes Ben Rhydding. Having lost to Sheffield, Ben Rhydding were required to win to progress to the latter stages. Unfortunately, despite quality performances from Charlie Green and Jack Purrington, York lost 2-0 but still qualified for a semi-final against Doncaster.
Doncaster proved stern opposition, creating many chances in the first 15 minutes. Having dominated possession, Doncaster took a deserved 2-0 lead through excellently worked short corners. Oliver Bonney and Greg Bowler played extremely well and Mathew Collinson stood out in defence and despite a late rally in the final 10 minutes, York were unable to reverse the deficit.
Special mention must go out to the supporters, rallied into stirling
voice by the four fantastic performances.
