MATCH REPORT - U nder 14 Boys – 25/10/09

York U14 Boys lost their 100% record on Sunday during round 2 of their Yorkshire League matches. York struggled to get in their stride during their 3 matches and it showed during their first game against Wakefield A, in which they should have taken something from, having had the greater percentage of play and attempts on goal! With some good break away play, Wakefield scored first, but midway through the game Matt Hays pulled one back with a well worked attack from York, but two further break away attacks from Wakefield late in the game lead to two well taken goals, Wakefield finally winning 3 – 1.
The second game against Sheffield, again saw York struggle to get going and score in a game they mostly controlled. With a new look defence, of Birch, Broadbent, Hamilton and Limbert holding Sheffield attacks at bay and some good attacking play involving Ellwood, Worrall and Heyes using both flanks, York eventually got into their stride, winning 3 -0 with goals from Lewis Inman and Matt Hays (2).
The final game was against their old rival Ben Rhydding A, The final score did not really do justice to York, losing 5 - 0, York played reasonably well and had a number of attempts on goal, including a penalty flick , but were unable to capitalise on their chances, where as Ben Rhydding A unfortunately did on theirs…

2008/2009

The City of York Hockey Club under 14 boys travelled to Harrogate to play in the Yorkshire Youth League.

U14A Report session1

COY 0 Ben Rhydding 3

COY 1 Bradford 0

COY 1 Rotherham 1

After a tough opening game against a useful Ben Rhydding side, they recovered well for a thoroughly deserved win against Bradford. Despite struggling to score goals, having had numerous chances and hit the post three times, they eventually found the net through Ben Smith.

They then had the better of the game against Rotherham and led through a Rory Ainslie goal, but paid the penalty for not killing the game off when Rotherham equalised in the last minute.

U14B Report session1

vs Halifax (Lost 1-3)

York started the morning against the strongest side - Halifax. For the first game together on a full pitch the side found good form but the experience of the Halifax side defeated them. Matt Hays managed to claw one back with a goal from a short corner. K Birch played a good game in goal and unphased by the strength of opposition made several very good saves.

vs Kirklees (Won 2-1)

The play started to flow better with some very good moves up the pitch by Alex Hamilton, Ryan Brown, Daniel Ellwood, Lewis Inman and William Broadbent. Matt Hays scored his second goal of the morning after a great break away with Jack Feasby. Elliot Kimberley made a crucial goal line save and Philip Worrall scored a second goal to win the match. B Worrall took over the goalie kit and for much of the game had very little to do - Oscar England and Mattie Birch strong in defence.

vs Thirsk (Drew 1-1)

Having provided four players for Thirsk for their previous games the inexperience of the U13 on a full pitch began to show as the defenders struggled to get back and control the ball in their D. Thirsk scored first with a fluke shot that bounced off a defenders shoulder but York fought back for Matt Hays to score his third of the session.

The team came 2nd on goal difference.

Session2 16th November 2008

Good performances from the lads yesterday resulted in two wins and a draw.

After opening with a 4-0 victory over Leeds Adel Carneige, with goals from Matt Andrews (2), Peter Fitton and Callum Craig, they followed this up with an even more convincing victory over Kirklees by 5-0, Callum Craig (2), Rory Ainslie (2) and Matt Andrews with the goals.

The last game was much tighter against a decent Sheffield side and after going behind early on COY played some excellent hockey to draw level through Peter Fitton, before he also had a goal disallowed at the very end of the game when the umpire blew for a short corner just as he put the ball in the net. Nathan Wilson made some excellent saves in a good game with a draw probably a fair result.

Session3 22nd January 2009

A decent effort from the lads on Sunday, with two wins and one defeat. They opened up with a fairly convincing win over Slazengers by three golas to nil, with Callum Craig, Ryan Mercer and Ben Smith on the scoresheet. They then had to go straight into a game against a useful Doncaster side. A really good game ended 2-0 to Doncaster after they scored a second with the last hit of the game to give themselves a rather flattering scoreline.

The third game proved to be probably the worst performance of the day but nevertheless provided a welcome victory against Ben Rhydding B team 2-1, goals from Callum Craig and a much needed winner from Harry Dixon.

Excellent performances on the day from Oliver Hicks and Jack Crowther.

Slazengers 0 COY 3

Doncaster 2 COY 0

Ben Rhdding 1 COY 2

Under 14 Boys Play Offs

A good year which saw the side improve throughout. Having lost their opening game, they were beaten only once more all season and ended with a record of played 15, won 10, drawn 3, lost 2. This ensured qualification to the playoffs in fifth place. Despite a tough group including the league winners, they won all three group games without conceding a goal to go through to a semi-final against Wakefield. Despite another strong performance and another clean sheet, the game ended 0-0 and they were denied a deserved place in the final on penalty flicks. Overall a very successful season where the team have made great progress.
