Session1

Match Report from City of York Hockey U12 Boys 'A' team at Halifax on 27th September 2009.

The U12 boys travelled to Halifax for the first Yorkshire Youth Fixture of the 2009/2010 season.

The A team squad included Tom Andrew in Goal, Tom Brett and Denholm Horn in Defence, Danny Vaughan, John Doran and Henry Wilson in Midfield, and Sam Engleman and Joel Surdhar in Attack.

The first match against Rotherham ended in stalemate with both teams finding their feet in their first match of the new season. Danny Vaughan had the closest attempt on goal, just shooting wide.
Result: York 'A' 0 Rotherham 0

The second match against a strong Ben Rhydding 'B' team also ended in stalemate. John Doran had an excellent match with strong solid tackling and running. The York team put in some good passing moves. A good clearance from Tom Andrew in goal kept out a useful Ben Rhydding attack. Tom Brett had a solid game in defence too, snuffing out any threat from the Rhydding forwards.
Result: York 'A' 0 Ben Rhydding 'B' 0

The third match was against Driffield. York started strongly and Sam Engleman was unlucky to have his early goal disallowed. Lovely movement between the midfield and forwards kept putting pressure on the Driffield defence and York were rewarded with a goal from Danny Vaughan, nicely set up by Sam. A second goal followed with a clearance from Denholm Horn in defence and great play from Joel Surdhar passing to Henry Wilson who set up Sam Engleman to score.
Result: York 'A' 2 Driffield 0

York started the fourth match against Sheffield strongly too, with Danny, Joel and Sam making good attacking runs. Danny was rewarded for his efforts with two great individual goals. Good defence from Denholm and Tom Andrew in goal, keeping the Sheffield attackers at bay.
Result: York 'A' 2 Sheffield 0

The final match against strong league favourites Ben Rhydding 'A' was a tense affair, with York more than a match for their oppenents. York couldn't capitalise with their good early spell of pressure. Ben Rhydding came back at York and good strong defending from Tom Brett, Denholm Horn and John Doran keeping the attackers at bay with Henry Wilson also coming back to help out with some strong tackling. The match ended in a respectable draw. Congratualtions go to Tom Andrew in goal who kept a clean sheet in all five matches.
Result: York 'A' 0 Ben Rhydding 'A' 0

Match Report from City of York Hockey U12 Boys 'B' team at Halifax on 27th September 2009.

They had three tough matches, but showed great character and spirit and a lot of promise of things to come.
Result: York 'B' 0 Ben Rhydding 'C' 3
Result: York 'B' 0 Kirklees 2
Result: York 'B' 0 Halifax 2

22nd November 2009

Denholm Horn, Danny Vaughan, Joel Surdhar and Henry Wilson again, were strong in midfield, and won many midfield battles and put together some lovely passing moves. Sam and Jack were the two York goal scorers, Jack scoring against Ben Rhydding 'A' team and Sam against Slazengers.

City of York Hockey Club Under 12 Boys ‘B’ Team

It was a spirited performance by an inexperienced side and they will certainly improve as they gain confidence.

Yorkshire Youth League 7th February 2010

City of York Hockey Club Under 12 Boys ‘A’ Team

The U12 Boys took 2 teams to the 4th Yorkshire Youth League fixture of the season at Pocklington on a cold, damp Sunday morning.
The 'A' team comprised of Tom Andrew, Tom Brett, John Doran, Danny Vaughan, Henry Wilson, Sam Engleman and James Fitton.
The 'A' team had a wobbly start against Slazenger's, still a little rusty from their 2 month break from competitive hockey. It was a close match but Slazengers sneaked a late goal to end up 1-0 victors.
In the second match against Driffield, despite going a goal down from the whistle they fought back and good build up play from Tom Andrew and Henry Wilson resulted in a goal from James Fitton. York got into their stride and scored a further 2 goals, one from Tom Andrew and James Fitton bagging a second. Tom Brett, playing in goal for the first time had a solid performance making a good save to build up his confidence. John Doran and Danny Vaughan showed great promise in defence.
The third match against Doncaster was settled fairly early on for York, with James Fitton and Henry Wilson scoring. There were two good saves from the Doncaster goalkeeper preventing more early goals, before Sam Engleman scored York's third and final goal stroking in Henry Wilson's cross.
Another win ensued for York against Harrogate, great attacking play from Tom Andrew, Henry Wilson, Sam Engleman and James Fitton resulted in goals for Sam and James. The strong, solid defensive duo of Danny Vaughan and John Doran snuffing out any threat from Harrogate, and Tom Brett in goal cleared a shot of the line.
The final game against Leeds was another tight match, with York showing great passing and control. Tom Andrew and James Fitton both had two good attempts on goal. Danny Vaughan and John Doran both had another solid game in defence, making sure nothing went by them. A great individual goal from Henry Wilson was enough to win the match for York. Tom Brett in goal kept another clean sheet, his third of the day.

City of York Hockey Club Under 12 Boys ‘B’ Team

The 'B' team comprised of Tom Starbuck, Joe Hadden, Ben Errington, Charlie Cunningham, Jack Harrington, George Avery and Alexander Goldthorpe.

The 'B' team’s first match was against a strong Halifax side. They all played well, good team work and a solid performance resulted in a nil - nil draw.
Their second match against Bradford saw York put some really good passing moves together, setting up some great attacking moves resulting in goals for Jack Harrington, Ben Errington and two for Joe Hadden. Tom Starbuck had a great game in goal saving 2 good shots from the Bradford attackers. The York defence was solid at the back.
Their final match was against a spirited Driffield side. It was a close affair with only one goal separating them at the final whistle. York worked hard together as a team and show great promise for the future. Two goals from Jack Harrington and one from Joe Hadden won the match for York.
The 'B' team boys showed excellent sportmanship, playing for other sides (Driffield and Bradford) when they were short of players. In one match George Avery scored 2 goals whilst in Bradford colours, helping them beat Driffield by 2 goals to one.

Yorkshire Youth League 28th February 2010

City of York Hockey Club Under 12 Boys ‘A’ Team

City of York U12 Boys 'A' team had a mixed bag of results at the 5th Yorkshire Youth League fixture of the season on a bitterly cold Sunday morning in Halifax.
The 'A' team comprised of Tom Brett, John Doran, Danny Vaughan, Henry Wilson, Tom Andrew, Sam Engleman and James Fitton.
They started off slowly against Slazenger's, some good saves from Tom Brett in goal keeping the Slazengers attack out. York were unlucky to concede a goal right at the end of the match with a shot deflected after a short corner rising over the heads of everyone into the goal.
The next two matches were tightly fought matches against firstly Ben Rhydding ‘A’ team then Ben Rhydding 'B' team. Both matches ended in nil - nil draws. York played well in both matches, starting to move the ball out wide to Tom Andrew and Sam Engleman on the wings, giving better shape to the team. John Doran and Danny Vaughan battled hard in defence making some cracking tackles. Henry Wilson took command of the midfield, making some telling runs, and James Fitton was unlucky in front of goal several times. Tom Brett did well in goal to keep clean sheets against two strong sides.
In the 4th match against Airedale, York put in a good solid performance but after a good goal from Airedale, York were unable to claw back the deficit despite some strong attacking moves from deep within midfield.
The final game against Rotherham was another tight match, with York showing great passing and movement out to Sam Engleman and Tom Andrew on the wing who whipped the ball across the Rotherham goal several times but James Fitton was unlucky not to get onto the end of any of them. Danny Vaughan and John Doran both had another solid game in defence, making some great tackles and clearances. A great individual goal from Henry Wilson was enough to win the match for York. Tom Brett made a great save and clearance right at the end of the match to keep another clean sheet, his third of the day.

City of York Hockey Club Under 12 Boys ‘B’ Team

The B Team arrived at Halifax short of players. In a show of great sportsmanship, players from other teams helped out to make up the numbers. The York players were Jo Hadden, Ben Errington, Charlie Cunningham, Daniel Roberts and Tom Starbuck (Keeper). A huge thanks to those players from Wakefield, Doncaster and Halifax who helped out. In particular Ollie Holmes from Wakefield, who was York ‘B’s top scorer of the day!

In their first match against Halifax, York ‘B’ had a superb game. Jo Hadden dominated the pitch and played some outstanding hockey. The final score of 3/0 to York was well deserved. The second game was a closely contested match against Doncaster. Full credit to York’s keeper, Tom Starbuck, who in his first season in goal is proving to be a valuable asset. He made numerous difficult saves and enabled the score to remain at 0/0.

The final three games were lost despite determined efforts by all the York players. Ben Errington was strong and consistent in defence whilst Jo Hadden continued to be a force to be reckoned with. Charlie Cunningham and Daniel Roberts were relentless in tackling the opposition. The three defeats were undeserved but did not deflate a positive and united team.

City of York Hockey Club Under 12 Boys
City of York U12 Boys took 2 teams to the North Yorkshire Yazoo Mini Hockey Championships at Harrogate.

The 'A' team squad comprised of Tom Brett (Goalkeeper), John Doran, Danny Vaughan, Henry Wilson, Sam Engleman, Tom Andrew, James Fitton and Joe Inman.
In York 'A''s first match against Thirsk 'A', York took control early on when James Fitton scored after some good build up play, followed closely by another goal this time from Henry Wilson. A long spell of pressure from York ensued with Tom Andrew, Joe Inman and Henry Wilson all narrowly missing the goal, before Henry Wilson netted his second. Sam Engleman scored York's fourth goal with a lovely strike from a crossed ball.
Great tackling from John Doran and Danny Vaughan in defence meant Tom Brett in goal spent the game without having to make a save.
York 'A's second match was against Harrogate 'A'. Again York took control of the game early on with Sam Engleman finding the net. York had the the majority of the play winning several short corners. Tom Andrew had a great game out on the wing whipping in some telling crosses. A lovely through ball from Danny Vaughan led to James Fitton scoring York's second, shortly after which Henry Wilson intercepted a Harrogate pass to score York's third. Joe Inman and John Doran had strong games in defence and midfield, snuffing out any threat from the Harrogate attack. Tom Brett had another game in goal without having a save to make. York's fourth goal came from a lovely one two combination between Henry Wilson and James Fitton with James Fitton putting the shot into the back of the net.
York 'A's final match was against a spirited York 'B' team, their first encounter of the season. York 'B's put up a strong fight against the 'A' team, with great saves from their keeper stopping shots from the 'A's striking force. It was well into the match before a goal from James Fitton broke the deadlock in favour of the 'A' team, then Danny Vaughan scored from a short corner shortly afterwards. John Doran, Henry Wilson and Joe Inman all worked tirelessly in midfield and defence, making sure that Tom Brett in goal had no work to do again. Sam Engleman and Tom Andrew provided several threats from out on the wings, with James Fitton latching onto a cross from Tom Andrew to score York's third goal.
Three wins out of three meant York 'A' team were crowned Yazoo Mini Hockey North Yorkshire Champions and now progress on to the Yorkshire Championships in April.
The 'B' team squad comprised of Tom Starbuck (Goalkeeper), Matthew Oversby-Brown, Charlie Cunningham, Simon Ellwood, Ben Errington, Joe Hadden, Harry Leaf, Drew Mansell, Oliver McGregor and Daniel Roberts.
The 'B' team came a very credible 3rd place, narrowly missing out on runners up spot.

Yorkshire Youth League 14th March 2010

City of York Hockey Club Under 12 Boys ‘A’ Team

City of York U12 Boys 'A' team travelled to Pocklington for their final Yorkshire Youth League fixture of the season, and finished on a high with five wins and one draw.
The 'A' team comprised of Tom Brett (Goalkeeper), John Doran, Danny Vaughan, Henry Wilson, Tom Andrew, Sam Engleman and James Fitton.
They kicked off with a match against a strong Ben Rhydding 'B' team. Good defence from John Doran and Danny Vaughan helping Tom Brett in goal to keep a clean sheet. James Fitton, Henry Wilson and Sam Engleman all went close with shots for York, with Tom Andrew working hard on the wing. A good strong positive start to the morning.
York started strongly in their second match against Doncaster 'A' team. Again Tom Andrew worked tirelessly on the wing, and likewise Henry Wilson covered the midfield well. A great individual goal from Danny Vaughan opened the scoring for York, followed up by a goal from Sam Engleman who pounced on a clearance from the Doncaster goalkeeper to net York's second.
York really found their form in a thrilling third match against Thirsk 'A'. The whole team played really well as a unit, passing the ball out wide to Tom Andrew and Sam Engleman on the wings. John Doran and Danny Vaughan worked hard in defence and both managed a few runs into the opposition half. Good build up play resulted in a goal from Henry Wilson. Danny Vaughan then latched onto a corner from Tom Andrew to score York's second. Thirsk came back at York, but great tackling from John Doran and a good save from Tom Brett kept them from scoring.
York piled on more pressure, resulting in another goal for Danny Vaughan, then a shot from Tom Andrew forcing a save from the Thirsk goalkeeper. It was James Fitton's turn to get on the scoresheet putting the ball away from nice build up play, then following up with his second again tucking the ball away neatly from Tom Andrew's cross. James Fitton rounded off the match with his hatrick and York's sixth goal with a fine assist from Henry Wilson.
In the 4th match against Ben Rhydding 'C' team, York put in a good solid performance. York weathered early pressure from Ben Rhydding, and opened the scoring with a goal from Henry Wilson. York were unlucky when Ben Rhydding equalised shortly after with a well taken goal from a short corner. York came back strongly and Sam Engleman put York back in the lead with a fine goal assisted by Henry Wilson. Sam Engleman then put the match beyond Ben Rhydding's reach with his second goal of the game.
The final game was a tense encounter with Bridlington 'A'. Bridlington started stronger, but York got back into the game and a great attacking move from Henry Wilson and Tom Andrew set up James Fitton to score a cracking goal. A great save by the Bridlington goalkeeper then denying Henry Wilson's well taken shot. York had to get back and defend a succession of corners and sterling work in defence from John Doran helping Tom Brett in goal to keep another clean sheet, his fourth of the day.

City of York Hockey Club Under 12 Boys ‘B’ Team

The U12’s ‘B’ Team were also at Pocklington and had a fantastic finish to the season. The team were: George Avery, Charlie Cunningham, Ben Errington, Jack Harrington, Drew Mansell, Oliver McGregor and Matthew O-Brown.

The first game against Halifax was fast paced and the boys showed great spirit. Good passing and positioning resulted in York dominating the game. Two great goals from Jack Harrington and one from Drew Mansell were well deserved. When Halifax did threaten our goal, Tom Starbuck made two spectacular saves to ensure the 3-0 win to York.

The second game was closely fought and was against a strong Driffield team. York were unlucky to not to score and defended well. The end result of 0/0 was fair.

In the final game, against Bingley Bees, York ‘B’ never looked in danger. Strong and confident passing kept play at the Bingley Bees end. Two goals, again for Jack Harrington and one from Matthew O-Brown gave a well deserved 3/0 result.

The other two scheduled matches against Brigg and Chapletown did not take place as neither turned up on the day.

Match Report from City of York Hockey U12 Boys 'B' team at Pocklington on 14th December 2008.

Several of the boys were playing in only their second league fixture, and can be very proud of their performances in their 4 matches. The team were one player short, and thanks go to the other teams in their league for lending players to make the numbers up.

The first 3 matches against Driffield, Ben Rhydding and Chapeltown were very tight and all ended up as nil - nil draws, with good solid defending from Tom Brett and many vital saves from Tom Andrew in goal, who also put in some good clearances. The midfielders Zac Ransome, Denholm Horn and Dexter Lynch covered the pitch well helping back in defence where required and teasing the opposition defence with good stick control and link up play. Ed Walmsley had a good solid game up front making some good runs.

The final match against Airedale was a nailbiter, with York taking the lead with a fantastic goal from Dexter and several other goal mouth scrambles with Ed and Zac narrowly missing. Airedale then equalised with a tremendous shot before adding a second and breaking the hearts of the York players just before the final whistle.

The York 'B' team can hold their heads high with some very credible performances and take that confidence to the next league fixture

Match Report from City of York Hockey U12 Boys 'B' team at Halifax on 11th January 2009.

A young, inexperienced team travelled to a blustery Halifax for the Yorkshire Youth League, with 2 new team members making their debut.
The team were without their own goalkeeper, and thanks go to the teams of Doncaster, Bradford, Chapeltown and Brigg for lending their goalkeepers through the fixtures.
Thanks also go to Ruby from Chapeltown who came on as sub and played several games for York when needed.
The York team took the opportunity in this session to try out new positions, but played in their normal positions for the first two matches with Sean Smith and Neil Smith in Defence, Tom Brett and Harry Radcliffe in Midfield, Denholm Horn and George Doyle in Attack.

The first match against Chapeltown was a good opener with Chapeltown providing the early pressure, only solid defending from Neil and Sean preventing any first half goals. Chapeltown scored early in the second half, then York sprung into life and had most of the possession for the remainder of the match with Harry and George going close. York piled on the pressure with three short corners in succession, but were unable to score from it.
Result: York 'B' 0 Chapeltown 'A' 1

The second match against Brigg was also very close and even, with nothing to split the teams. An injury to George saw him limp off for treatment. Ruby came on as sub for him.
Result: York 'B' 0 Brigg 'A' 0

The third match was against a very strong Bradford side, but York put up a good fight and started to gel together as a team. Harry and George swapped around to try new positions. The experience of the Bradford side soon told and they took a two nil lead. York kept their heads up but were unable to close the gap.
Result: York 'B' 0 Bradford 'A' 2

The fourth match against Kingston-upon Hull was all change as the team tried out new positions with Tom and Ruby having a good solid match in defence helping to keep a clean sheet. Neil and Denholm tried out midfield, and covered the pitch well, helping back in defence when needed and supporting in attack too. Harry and George paired up well in attack. Again this was a very tight match with nothing to separate the two teams.
Result: York 'B' 0 Kingston upon Hull 'A' 0

The final match against Doncaster also saw some changes with Tom and Denholm in defence, Neil and Ruby in midfield, and Harry and George pairing up again in attack. This was an exciting match with Harry and George going close several times, the team played well with Ruby and Neil finding space in midfield. Tom and Denholm providing a stronghold at the back not allowing any first half goals. A great strike from Harry in the second half saw York's first goal of the day, and they desperately tried to hold onto their lead, but Doncaster rallied and levelled the score towards the end of the match.
Result: York 'B' 1 Doncaster 'A' 1
