REPORTS
2009/2010
City of York Under 10 Boys ‘A’
Both teams had a short journey to Pocklington for round 2 of their Yorkshire
Youth League matches
In their first match in Division 1, the boy’s team were very unluckily
not to get anything out of the game against Ben Rhydding B, in a very
entertaining and closely fought match. York played some excellent hockey,
and passed well in going forward, opening up Ben Rhydding’s defence on
a number of occasions, York eventually managed to make one of these attacks
count with Joe Inman scoring, although eventually losing 2-1 to a late
Ben Rhydding winner. In the second game, the boys played Hull. From the
start York, quickly got in too their stride, with the midfield of Jack
Fletcher, Luke Burnet and Hamish Broadbent, taking control of the game
and setting up Joe Inman to score a hat trick of quick goals. Hull managed
to pull one back and some stout defending by Andrew Hyams and goalkeeper,
Alex Horn ensured a 3-1 win. The next game against Ben Rhydding A, saw
another closely fought contest, both sides had their chances, but neither
could make them count and again stout defending and goalkeeping by York
ensured a creditable 0-0 draw. The final game was against Airedale A.
Airedale quickly scored 2 early goals and it took York a bit to get going.
With Douglas Blackwood now driving York forward from midfield, York began
to open Airedale up and were unlucky not to pull at least one goal back,
eventually losing 2-0.
City of York Under 10 Boys ‘B’
City of York B team struggled a bit in Division 3 in their matches. This
was a new team playing together for the first time. York showed fighting
sprit thought the matches from all the players and some excellent defending
from Calum Green, support by Katrina Bonner and goalkeeping from Beth
Wilson, kept York always in the hunt. In the end York lost their first
5 matches, Ben Rhydding C; 2-0 and 1-0, Doncaster; 2-0 and 3-0 and Kirklees
2-0 and then in the final match again against Kirlees held them to an
excellent 2-2 draw (Dyer and Bonner scoring). Overall this did not do
justice to the performance all round of the team. All should be pleased
with the performance.

City of York Hockey Club Under 10 Boys ‘A’ Team 14th Feb 2010
In their first match, the team were very unluckily not to get anything out of the game against Harrogate. In a closely fought match, York played some excellent hockey, and passed well in going forward, opening up Harrogate’s defence on a number of occasions, York eventually managed to make one of these attacks count only for the goal to be disallowed, thus ensuring a 0-0 draw.
The second match was against Hull; again it was a fiercely fought contest with both sides pushing for a win. York passed well and had many attempts on goal but struggled to find the back of the net. They were unfortunately undone by a fluke goal with Hull hitting the post before rebounding into the goal off our keeper’s pads. 1 – 0 to Hull.
The third game was now a must win. York had another tough game, but through some well worked interchanges between the players, established some good some attacking positions, from which they managed to score three goals, 2 from Luke Burnett and 1 from Joe Inman. Again, York had most of the possession. Wakefield put up a good defence but could not prevent the three goals.
The penultimate game was against Ben Rhydding B. York again played well as a team with lots of passing play using both Hamish Broadbent and Ali Browne on the flanks, with Jack Fletcher in the centre working hard to maintain control over the ball a lot of the time. Ben Rhydding never looked like scoring as the York defender in Andrew Hyams played strongly with lots of clearance to the York attackers, who in Joe Inman finally snatched a winner. 1-0 to York.
The final game was a real tense affair, which saw York take on Ben Rhydding A. The game was end to end, both sides attacking and defending well. An excellent quick ’16’ from Hyam’s, cut the Ryhdding’s team in two, finding Fletcher in space, who with a pin point pass found Inman inside the opponents D to fire home. ‘Q’ leaps in the air from the coach ‘Fletch’ in delight! York now had to hang on as Ben Rhydding continued to attack seeking an equaliser. Some excellent defending and two great stops from York’s keeper Alex Horn kept them at bay. But with only 8 seconds to go, saw the opposition steal one right at the end in what was an excellent game and 1-1 draw.

All the boys can be proud of their efforts in finishing 3rd in their league and making finals day.
City of York Hockey Club Under 10 Boys ‘B’ Team 14th Feb 2010
Some new players and a new formation paid dividends to the B team, all
playing exceptionally well as a team.
In the first game, York were extremely luckily to lose 1-0 to Ben Rhydding
C. In the second game against Airedale B, York got in to their stride
early, and through some excellent team play and passing exchanges, lead
to them scoring five times, through Dan Dyer (3), Zac Moorcroft and Megan
Harrington. In the final game, York took on Chappletown B. York dominated
the game, camping mainly in their opponents half, with many shots on goal,
only to find a an opposition keeper ready to stop them. But continuous
pressure from our forward, finally lead to two well taken goals from Dan
Dyer, and with Robert Vaughan unlucky not to add to the tally. York ran
out 2 – 0 winners.
Special mention to defender Rowan Routledge, cut out any attack that was
likely to break and to Beth Wilson, who not only kept goal for York well,
also helped out in goal for other teams, when York were not playing. All
should be pleased with the efforts.
